Leave some space for chaos.Your anxiousness to keep everything orderly, makes you more tensed. When you are tensed even things you do right go wrong. When you are upset you are weak. Smile! – Sri Sri
Q: Guriji, You said there is no significant purpose for the universe but it is also said that every individual is born for some purpose. Isn’t it contradictory?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Truth is contradictory. Every little thing has a purpose, at the same time, it has no purpose because this whole thing is a game. If you consider the world as a game, then there is no purpose. A game has no purpose, it is an expression of joy. Dance doesn’t have a goal because dance in itself is an expression of happiness. What is the purpose of you laughing? Does laughter have any purpose? You are happy, so you laugh. You don’t have to wait for a joke to laugh. You know, children don’t understand jokes but they laugh, babies do laugh. If you think jokes are the only reason for one to laugh then babies would never laugh till they understand your jokes. You have an illusion that you have to listen to a joke to laugh. Laughter has no purpose because it is an expression of being, an expression of joy.
Love has no purpose because it is your very nature. The sun has no purpose to send its rays. If you ask me, why does sun shine, what does it achieve? I’ll say, ‘Oh my God, you are such a businessman, you need a purpose for everything!’ The sun shines because it is its nature. It can’t but shine. So, in this context, I said, ‘Whenever you think, ‘what is the purpose?’ you are caught up in the cause and effect phenomenon. No doubt, the cause and effect phenomenon is there, it is a law of nature but truth is beyond the cause and effect phenomenon. Divinity is beyond that. It is much bigger and vaster, so in this sense I said, there is no purpose. Sun shines because it is its nature, wind blows because it is its nature. What is the purpose of the tsunami? Was it just to kill people? If it’s purpose was to kill people only then it must have hit only those areas in which people lived. But it hit those areas also where there were no people. Nature is beyond cause and effect or conclusion, theory, understanding or misunderstanding. It is the existence which is total, beyond purpose. So you can say, virtually there is no purpose. If at all you have to pin down to a purpose then the purpose of nature is to take you to the Source, is to remind you of the Source, connect you to your Source.
In every person if we see the element of Divinity and love then we will see the oneness in everybody around us, for they have come from the same God. – Sri Sri
Q: Now a days children are born corrupted. They blackmail/disturb the parents emotinally. Work like Lokayukta and get us some happiness
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: We can give only happiness. We are here to just give happiness. Those who are interested, takes it. Rest runs away.
Arjuna also said, ‘Krishna, you say different things at different times. I am so confused. Please tell me one thing that I should do.’ Then Lord Krishna says intelligent people know there are many facets, many angles, all is spherical whereas dull people think everything is linear – Sri Sri
Q: Guruji, if we are taking any allopathic medicines, will it have any side effects to take Ayurveda along with it?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: No! The beauty of the Ayurvedic medicines is that there are no side effects and they do not contradict any other medicine.
The most important is the faith in the being, the highest self – the faith that I am going to get whatever I need and whenever I need. Then you give miracle a chance. – Sri Sri
Q: Guruji, What is the significance of Guru Purnima?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: It is the day when the disciple wakes up in his fullness and in the wakefulness he can’t be but grateful. This gratitude is not of dwaita (you and me), but of advaita. It is not a river moving from somewhere to somewhere, but is the ocean moving within itself. So, gratefulness on Guru-Purnima symbolizes that fullness.
The purpose of the Guru Purnima celebration is to turn back and review and see in this last one year how much one has progressed in life. For a seeker, Guru Purnima is a day of significance, is a day of New Year. It is the day to review one’s progress on the spiritual path and renew one’s determination and focus on the goal, and to resolve what one wants to do in the coming year. As the full moon rises and sets, tears of gratitude arise and repose into the vastness of one’s own self.”
You know, our body has millions of cells, and each cell has its own life. Many cells are being born every day and many are dying. So, you are a moving town. So many cities are on the planet Earth and planet Earth is revolving and moving around the Sun. Same way, there are so many cells and so many living beings inside you and you are moving around. You are a moving township. Like in a beehive, there are so many bees which come and sit, but there is one queen bee. If the queen bee goes away, every other bee goes away. In the same way, there is an atom in our body, the queen bee. If that is not there, everything else goes away. Locate in that, in that tiniest of the tiny atom, the atma or the self. It is everywhere yet nowhere. That is the queen bee and that is what you are. That is what the Divine is, and that is the Guru principle. Like there is fatherhood, motherhood, there is Guruhood also. You all have to play Guruhood at least to somebody. You do play, you keep giving advices and guiding people consciously or unconsciously, and give them love and care. But do it with 100 percent without expecting anything in return. That is living the Guruhood, living the self. There is no difference between the Divine, you and the Guru Principle. It is all coming to one thing, the queen bee.
Meditation is relaxing and reposing in that atom. So, think of all the things that you could be grateful for, and ask what you want. And bless everybody. We receive, but not just receiving is enough, we should give and bless those who are in need.
The biggest power is rest; deep rest and love. If these two things are present in life, then everything else will come. It will happen – Sri Sri
Q: What is my role w.r.t you. I dont want to do anything else other than this?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See what you can do. Always, You can do something more than this. First Make your own list.
Don’t bank your faiths on the banks but bank your faith on the divinity and the power of your own sankalpa (positive sankalapa) and thoughts. – Sri Sri
Q: Guruji, what is the Supreme Power of this universe?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Supreme Power is the simplest power.
See, atom is everywhere, right? The whole universe is covered by atoms. Everything is made up of atoms. But an atomic power station is different. In the same way, the Supreme Power is the simplest, most easily available, cheapest commodity – you can’t even call it commodity; it is the basis of all of existence. It is not up there somewhere. It is like space, like the field. If you ask me where is the magnetic field of the Earth? It is everywhere!
It is even more subtle than the magnetic field which is present everywhere, all the time, and with the same intensity. It is not that the supreme power is somewhere there. Instead of calling it Supreme Power, we should say, the Basic Power, the existence. That is what the ancient people called it – Existence. ‘Sat’ – that which Is, and ‘Chitta’, which is conscious and is blissful.
How do you experience the bliss of that Supreme Power, or the substratum of universe? By being quiet and turning your mind inward. By practice, bliss comes to the surface.
Don’t get involved in every situation with the intention that, through the experience of this situation, I will derive pleasure and fun. When you go after fun and pleasure, you will experience misery somewhere or the other. Fun and pleasure are not the only goals in life – Sri Sri
Q: If 10 people who are all corrupt stand in election then whom do we vote for?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: We need a change in the electoral system as well. If someone wins by just 11%. It means that the rest of the people were against him.
Desires linger in your mind when you do not have faith. When you are thirsty then only the desire for water arises, but what will happen if you sit and think about water all day? Do you understand what I am saying? What does desire mean? A lack of faith that I am going to get what I need. So with satsang, sadhana and seva, our faith becomes very strong and all work gets done like it’s getting done in your lives right now – Sri Sri
Q: Many a times we see people doing wrong, but we cannot do anything.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You saw what happened now. Everyone work together. Working in group we can achieve lot of things.
If you are a taker of happiness, you get misery. If you are a giver of happiness, you get joy and love. – Sri Sri
Q: Guruji, What is thought, Why it comes and from where it comes?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Is this a thought? It came in you? Why did it come? Now find out. As soon as you realize this, the question is, itself, a thought and it has come in you, you have answers for the first two questions. And why does it come? Because of a lack of any other questions. Now I want you find its source. When you start finding source of thought, you have started on a journey for which you are here. Our journey is to find the source, from where this thought has arisen. I want all of you to be scientists. Scientist goes on experimenting, asking questions. It’s a very good opportunity to find out where it comes from? What is its origin? Since it comes in you, you find its answer. If it doesn’t come in you and somebody else, then I’ll answer.
Happiness is in making others happy, and in serving others. When you do seva (service to others) the divine streams through you. Seva opens you up – Sri Sri
Q: Guruji, do the Moon, Stars, and other heavenly bodies affect the mind? If yes then how?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yes. Do you know the Moon affects the ocean? On Full Moon Day the waves are higher. The Moon affects water – this we all know. Our body is made up of water. Nearly 60% of our body is made up of water, and it has saline content, like the ocean. So your body is a miniature capsule of sea water. You are a sachet. If the fluids are drained out of your body, you will shrink. You are a sachet of sea water – somewhere red, somewhere blue, somewhere different colors, all inside one packet. So your body is 60% water. So the Moon has influence on the body. Anything that influences the body influences the mind as well. So mind is affected by the Moon. That is why people who go crazy are called lunatics. The word itself says lunatics. Similarly other heavenly bodies also have an impact on the system. See, energy field is so interesting. Everything in the cosmos is inter-connected and inter-related.
The ancient people knew this. It is so amazing how they connected the microcosm with the macrocosm. Sun is connected with the eyes. Mind is connected with the Moon. Mars is connected with the liver. Planet Saturn is connected with the teeth. So, different parts of the body are connected with different wavelengths or frequencies of the planet. And what are they connected to? They are connected with a particular grain, a color and a bird, or a creature as well. Like Mars is connected with your liver, it is connected with sheep, and it is connected with chickpeas. Chickpeas, Mars, sheep, goat, and the liver are all connected.
So they found a connection between all these elements; macrocosm to microcosm. It is interesting science; absolutely interesting, fascinating. You have to go deep into that research. Similarly, Saturn is connected with sesame seeds; it is connected with crows and with your teeth. It is interesting! I tell you, very interesting!
You might have heard about the butterfly effect. A butterfly fluttering its wings in the rain forest in South America has an influence on the clouds in China! How one butterfly’s movement makes a difference in the clouds in China. Very interesting! That is why in Sanskrit there is a saying, ‘Yat pinde tat bramhaande’, which means whatever is in the universe is all present in a capsule form. Your body is a miniature universe because it is connected with everything that is there. You are not an island. You are connected to the society, and not just society, to the whole globe!
Without you wanting to be connected, you are already connected. You are connected with every single individual on the planet, whether you realize it, acknowledge it or not – it doesn’t matter. You are already connected.
Do everything. Fulfil all your duties and responsibilities and still stay detached with a sense of sacrifice. Take the responsibility of the leadership of the country and still have a sense of detachment and sacrifice in your mind. – Sri Sri
