SriSriSpeaks: Everything is in the name. If someone calls you a donkey, how do you feel? You don’t feel good. When someone says you are very beautiful, just listening to that makes you feel good. Similarly when we chant the Divine’s name, the life force in us goes up.
Q: What is the difference between self-enquiry and judging ourselves?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Self-enquiry is, ‘Who am I? What do I want? Where am I going? What is life all about?’ This is self-enquiry.Judging is to brand ourself.
Judgment puts you down but self-inquiry uplifts you. Self-inquiry is always uplifting; judgment makes you depressed.
SriSriSpeaks: A Guru removes garbage, i.e., ignorance. Now, why are you bothered with how I handle the garbage? I know how to process them! Just give it to me and be happy.
Q: I feel the connection with some people and I don’t feel connected to some people. Why so?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Never mind. Keep expanding your personality and then one day you will feel connected to everybody. Go deeper in meditation.
SriSriSpeaks: When you keep the company of good people the mind changes accordingly and when you keep the company of bad people, the mind naturally goes towards that. So keep coming back to satsangs.
Q: How to learn from experience? Often we keep doing the same thing but don’t learn.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: If you keep doing the same thing again and again, knowing that it brings you misery, you really don’t understand it brings you misery or you think it brings you some pleasure. Craving for pleasure and non-awareness that it is going to cause you misery are two things which makes you commit the same mistake again and again. That’s why they’re called habit. Habits don’t give you pleasure but they inflict pain by not following them.
